Why You Should Consult Your DJ For Reception Music Before Your Wedding Day!
Music is an integral part of your wedding ceremony and reception. As much as people will remember your dress and your wedding vows, the music you choose can literally make or break your reception. For many couples, working with a tight budget can be tough and they often choose to cut the DJ out of their reception. DJing your own reception with an iPod may seem like a fun and innovative idea at first glance, but there are quite a few pitfalls when you choose to not hire a DJ.
You need to establish your reception music well before your wedding day, so it makes sense to consult a professional DJ beforehand to help you make wise choices. Even if you feel that you already have a list of tracks you wish to include, getting a second opinion from a DJ can make a world of difference and here’s why:
Help Set The Vibe
Music, as was mentioned, is the one thing that people will ultimately remember about your wedding. Selecting the right music is key to setting the vibe for the day, and even if you have quite a few tracks in mind, a DJ can help you choose the ones that will work well for the look and feel of the reception. Your DJ can lend a professional opinion, but make sure to get together with your DJ well before your wedding.
Hit Guests With Variety
You want your guests to enjoy themselves on the dance floor, therefore, it’s important to incorporate a wide variety of tracks into your reception. That means a DJ can help you compile a music list that can include slow and fast paced songs and even different genres that may not mesh well together at first glance.
Book Early For A Good Price
You should consult a DJ before your ceremony in order to find the right tracks to play in order, but also to book early and get a good price. DJs are often in high demand and prices may vary depending on the season and the day your wedding is being held.
Get To Know Your DJ
Choosing your wedding reception music before your wedding is also a good time to get to know your DJ. A DJ that has a poor personality and no improv skills is a person you really wouldn’t want present on your big day. In order to get the most out of your experience, you need the right DJ that is on the same page as you. Even though a DJ is cheaper than employing a wedding band, you still should get your money’s worth.
A DJ should always keep your likes and dislikes in mind when helping you select your music tracks. Never wait until the last moment to book someone for your reception as it can leave a lot of room for error. Your DJ can be an invaluable source of help, but only if you choose the right one.

Joseph and Melissa Kim
At one of my favorite venues in Carlsbad, The Crossings, I got the work with Joseph and Melissa Kim on there “Big Day”. There event was a referral from a previous wedding groom who was also there as the Best Man. What I liked most about this event was 2 things. 1) The simple elegance that the Kim’s went with, very pretty but simple decor and centerpieces. 2) The amazing focus on family there were lots of kids running around and everyone was so happy that there entire family could join in the celebration. As we opened the dance floor early, the kids ranging from 2- 12 took over the floor and made for some serious jumping around. The Kims’ also provided a table just for the youngsters with crayons, coloring books and little games from them to play, Although I think they liked the Dance floor and the Photo booth a little bit better. This was truly a great FAMILY wedding!
